Misbah-ul-Haq-led unit register the second victory in the Pakistan Super League
Mohammad Sami produced an inspirational bowling performance and Andre Russell showed was he is capable of as Islamabad United beat Lahore Qalandars in the super over in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in Sharjah on Friday.
After the first match was washed out due to rain, the game started half-an-hour late and Qalandars captain Brendon McCullum won the toss and opted to bowl first.
His decision proved a correct one as United lost four wickets for just 44 runs in 11 overs. However, a quick-fire 37-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Russell and Hussain Talat helped United finish with 121 for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
South Africa all-rounder JP Duminy finished United’s innings with the top score of 34 off 36 balls with the help of three fours and one six, whereas Talat scored crucial 33 off 21 with the help of one four and two sixes.
For Qalandars, leg-spinner Yasir Shah was the best bowler of the lot as he finished with figures of three for 20 in his four overs, whereas pacer Sohail Khan finished with figures of two for 23.
In reply, Qalandars had a horrid start as well and lost two wickets in the first over of the innings. But young Agha Salman played a beautiful innings to put his team well on their way to a comfortable victory.
And when it seemed like a walk in the park, Qalandars had another mammoth collapse and lost last eight wickets for just 44 runs to take the match into super over.
Salman finished the innings with the top score of 48 off 35 with the help of six fours and two sixes, whereas captain McCullum played an uncharacteristic knock of 34 off 49 with the help of two fours and one six.
For United, Sami was the standout performer as he claimed three wickets and just gave away 21 runs.
In the super over, Lahore posted a good score of 15 on the board, but Islamabad United went over the line, courtesy last-ball six from Russell when his team needed three to register a victory.
