Newcomers Multan Sultans shocked everybody as they completed a comfortable win over Peshawar Zalmi in opening game of 2018 Pakistan Super League played at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Shoaib Malik and Kumar Sangakkara played crucial knocks to see get off to a great start in the competition. It wasn’t that easy as opener Ahmed Shehzad went for a duck while Sohaib Maqsood played well for his 21 runs. He was dismissed by left-arm spinner Mohammad Asghar to see Pakistan reduced to 54 for 2 after 8.1 overs.
Kumar Sangakkara along with Shoaib Malik played well as they tried to string together a partnership. The experience clearly helped as Malik and Sangakkara took calculated risks to add 52 runs in space of six overs.
Kumar Sangakkara brought up his half-century in style after striking a big six over fine leg. Wahab Riaz took out Sangakkara as Sri Lanka batsman was dismissed for 57 runs. Malik remained unbeaten till the end and scored 42 runs to see Multan Sultans register a win in the first game of the competition.
Earlier, Peshawar never got going in their innings as left-arm pacer Mohammad Irfan provided early breakthrough to see the side slump to 22 for 2 after 3.3 overs. Dwayne Smith played well and struck three boundaries. He was dismissed by Imran Tahir at a crucial moment. Mohammad Hafeez proved to be savior in the batting department. He started slowly and but picked up the pace at the end of the innings.
Hafeez scored 59 runs off 52 runs and smashed six boundaries to see Peshawar Zalmi register 151 runs on the board. Haris Sohail and Darren Sammy also played vital cameos to see Peshawar get crucial runs at the back end of the innings.
Multan Sultans will be pleased with the performance with bat and ball while defending champions will need to produce better results in order to compete in the 2018 Pakistan Super League.
