England all-rounder Samit Patel has signed for Islamabad United for the upcoming season of Pakistan Super League. Patel made his international debut in the T20 format for England in 2011 and but has not been in the national setup for a long time now. He played his last international game in 2013. He has also played six Test matches for England besides 36 One-Day Internationals. He has played 18 T20 games for England in a career that has spanned almost seven years.

Samit Patel also participated in this year’s Bangladesh Premier League representing Rajshahi Kings. The all-rounder was picked up as a replacement for Sri Lanka all-rounder Asela Gunaratne who will take part in the upcoming season of PSL. Gunaratne has opted to skip the competition due to international duties for Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan cricket board has called on national players to take part in the training camp that will begin in February.

Gunaratne has made it clear that his top priority is to play international cricket for Sri Lanka and therefore had to decline such a lucrative offer of playing in this year’s PSL. Islamabad United also wasted no time and announced Samit Patel as the probable replacement for Gunaratne in the upcoming season. Also, United also signed another England all-rounder David Willey, who will be keen do well in his first season of PSL.

The one-time winners would play their first game against defending champions Peshawar Zalmi on 24th February. The third season of PSL will begin from 22nd February.
